The crusades undertaken by the Christian nations of the Occident were largely driven by politics and religion.
However, the Crusaders fought fervently for their religious beliefs and, as the Crusades continued over time, their motives, beliefs and influences changed.
Some of these reasons were: religious conflicts, the Christian relationship with Islam, the area of conflict between Rome and Constantinople and the expulsion of the non-Christians from the Holy Land. Many Christians imagined their participation in the Crusades to be the fulfillment of the will of God, hoping for the remission of all their earthly sins and the promise of finding redemption. |
